How Your Lifestyle Affects Your Supplement Needs

Your health goals tell us what to recommend. But how you live day to day can change how your body uses what you take — and what you might need more or less of. Here's what's worth knowing.

💡

Why We Wrote This

Zero SP keeps your plan simple — one goal, one health factor, three gold standard recommendations. But your daily habits and circumstances can genuinely change how supplements work for you. Rather than adding more filters and questions to your plan, we've put that context here — so you can apply it yourself, in the way that makes sense for your life.

🌙

Shift Work

Timing recommendations like "morning" or "evening" assume a standard daytime schedule — but if you work nights or rotating shifts, your body's morning might be at 9pm. Shift work also disrupts your natural circadian rhythm, which can affect sleep quality, vitamin D levels and how alert you feel during your working hours.

What to do: Adjust supplement timing to your own wake and sleep pattern rather than the clock on the wall. If a product says "take in the morning," take it when your day begins — whatever time that is for you.
🥑

Keto & Low Carb Diets

Very low carbohydrate diets change how your kidneys handle sodium, which can lead to a knock-on loss of potassium and magnesium too — often described as "keto flu" in the early weeks. This can mean genuinely higher electrolyte and magnesium needs than someone eating a standard diet.

What to do: If you're following a low carb or ketogenic diet, pay particular attention to electrolyte and magnesium recommendations — your needs may be higher than the standard guidance reflects.
🚬

Smoking

Smoking increases oxidative stress in the body and is well established to lower circulating vitamin C levels — some research suggests smokers may need meaningfully more vitamin C than non-smokers to maintain the same levels. Antioxidant support in general tends to be in higher demand.

What to do: If antioxidant or immune-related products come up in your recommendations, this is a genuine reason they may be particularly relevant to you.
🍷

Alcohol Consumption

Regular alcohol consumption can interfere with the absorption of B vitamins, particularly B1 (thiamine), and places extra demand on the liver. It can also disrupt sleep quality, even when it initially feels like it helps you fall asleep faster.

What to do: B vitamin and liver-support recommendations may carry extra relevance if you drink regularly. Taking supplements at a different time of day to when you typically drink can also support better absorption.
😰

High Stress Levels

Chronic stress increases the body's use of magnesium and B vitamins, and prolonged elevated cortisol can affect sleep, digestion and mood — often creating a cycle where stress makes everything else harder to manage.

What to do: If stress is a significant part of your life right now, it's worth exploring Zero SP's Stress & Low Mood goal directly for more targeted recommendations, alongside whatever else you're currently working on.
🏋️

Regular Intense Exercise

Heavy or frequent training increases the body's need for protein, electrolytes and magnesium, and can increase oxidative stress that antioxidants help manage. Recovery time and sleep quality also become more important the harder you train.

What to do: If you train intensely, our Fitness & Recovery goal is designed specifically around these needs — worth exploring directly if this is a significant part of your routine.
😪

Poor Sleep

Poor sleep affects almost every other area of health — immune function, mood, appetite regulation and cognitive performance all suffer when sleep is consistently disrupted or insufficient.

What to do: If sleep is a genuine ongoing struggle, selecting our Sleep goal directly will give you targeted recommendations rather than treating it as a side note to something else.
🎯

The Bottom Line

None of these lifestyle factors change which supplements we recommend for your selected goal — but they can genuinely change how much attention certain recommendations deserve, and how you time or prioritise them. If several of these apply strongly to you, it may be worth running your plan again with a different goal to get recommendations targeted specifically at that area.
