Most of us spend more time reading the back of a cereal box than a supplement label. That's partly because supplement labels are designed to impress, not to inform. By the time you've absorbed the health claims on the front and the long ingredient list on the back, you're none the wiser about whether the product is actually worth buying.
This guide will change that. We'll walk through every section of a UK supplement label, explain what the regulations mean in practice, and show you where to look for the details that actually matter.
What UK law actually requires on a label
Since Brexit, UK supplement labelling is governed by retained EU law — primarily the Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003 and associated guidance from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). In practice, the rules are very similar to those still in force across the EU.
By law, every supplement sold in the UK must display the following on its label:
Unlike medicines, food supplements in the UK are not required to prove efficacy before going on sale. The FSA regulates safety and labelling accuracy — not whether the product actually works. This is why reading beyond the label matters.
The anatomy of a supplement label
Beyond the mandatory information, most labels are divided into a front panel (the marketing face) and a back or side panel (the technical detail). Here's what to pay attention to in each.
The front panel
Treat the front of any supplement with healthy scepticism. This is where health claims, product names, and eye-catching imagery live. The claims here are legally constrained (more on that in section 6), but the framing and emphasis are entirely the manufacturer's choice. A product branded "Advanced Immune Support" may contain nothing more than standard vitamin C at a modest dose.
The supplement facts / nutrition information panel
This is where the real information lives. You're looking for three things: what's in it, how much of it, and in what form. All three matter — and the third is the one most people overlook.
Understanding NRVs — and why they're a starting point, not an answer
Next to many nutrients you'll see a percentage listed as % NRV — Nutrient Reference Value. This is the UK/EU standard that replaced the older RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) terminology. An NRV represents the approximate amount of a nutrient considered sufficient for the general population.
An NRV of 100% doesn't mean more won't help — and 500% doesn't mean it will. Context, form, and individual need matter far more than the percentage figure.
There are a few important limitations to be aware of:

Active forms vs cheap forms
This is the single most overlooked aspect of supplement labels — and one of the most important. Many nutrients come in multiple chemical forms, and the form used has a significant impact on how well your body can absorb and use it.
Manufacturers are required to list the form of each nutrient, but they are under no obligation to make it easy to understand. Here are some of the most common examples:

A higher dose of a cheaper form is not necessarily equivalent to a lower dose of a better-absorbed form. Magnesium oxide, for example, is around 4% absorbed — meaning a 500mg tablet may deliver less usable magnesium than 100mg of magnesium glycinate.
Fillers, binders, and additives
The "other ingredients" list — sometimes called excipients — tells you what's in the product beyond the active nutrients. Most supplements contain some of these, and not all of them are cause for concern. But some are worth knowing about.
Common excipients and what they do

Shorter excipient lists are generally preferable, but an absence of fillers shouldn't be a primary selection criterion — the quality and form of active ingredients matters far more.
What health claims are (and aren't) allowed
In the UK, health claims on supplement labels are regulated under retained EU Regulation 1924/2006. Only claims that appear on the official GB or EU approved lists may be made — and they must be accompanied by conditions of use.
This sounds reassuring, but there are important caveats. Approved claims are often general and unspecific — for example, "Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system." This is a factual, if modest, statement. It says nothing about dose, form, or individual need. It certainly doesn't mean the product will stop you getting ill.
Any supplement that claims to treat, cure, or prevent a disease is making an illegal medicinal claim. These products are regulated as medicines in the UK and must have a product licence. If you see language like "clinically proven to eliminate..." or "reverses the effects of..." on a supplement, treat it as a warning sign — not a selling point.
Phrases like "supports", "contributes to", and "helps maintain" are the standard approved language. They're deliberately cautious — which can make even well-evidenced supplements sound underwhelming. Certifications worth looking for
Because supplements aren't regulated like medicines, third-party certification is one of the most useful signals of quality. Look for these on UK-sold products:

Note that certification is expensive, and some excellent smaller manufacturers don't carry formal third-party certs. Its absence isn't a definitive red flag — but its presence is always a positive signal.
Your quick-reference checklist
Next time you pick up a supplement, run through these questions before you buy:
- Is the dose per serving clearly stated — and does it match what clinical evidence suggests is effective?
- What form is each active ingredient in? Is it a well-absorbed form, or a cheaper alternative?
- Are the health claims specific and plausible — or vague and overblown?
- Is this a "proprietary blend"? If so, individual ingredient doses are hidden — proceed with caution.
- Does the excipients list contain anything you'd prefer to avoid (e.g. titanium dioxide, artificial colours)?
- Is the manufacturer named and UK-based or operating under UK/EU regulatory standards?
- Does the product carry any meaningful third-party certification?
- Is there independent clinical evidence for this ingredient — beyond what the label itself says?
